Our challenge: helping parents and carers manage household bills
Caring for a child with special educational needs can be emotionally and financially challenging for a parent or caregiver. It can leave little room to focus on other things and juggling worries about household bills and living costs can put significantly more pressure on the parent or caregiver.
Our approach: partnering with Leigh Youth and Community Development Trust
Our partnership with the Leigh Youth and Community Development Trust (LCT) has enabled us to talk to parents/carers and their families about smart meters and how they can help take control of their energy usage and bills.
Hannah Forbes, Programmes Director at Leigh Youth and Community Development trust:
"Funding from Smart Energy GB is amazing for the A team Hub, because when we set it up, we wanted to be a one stop shop. The training and resources have allowed my staff to train up, so they’re very confident in speaking to people about smart meters and energy bills, as well as other support in the area like local food banks … because our beneficiaries are from vulnerable communities or on a low income, it means so much to them to receive that support"
The Trust helps residents in Leigh and Wigan in the North West of England. It aims to create a stronger and safer community. It supports the local community’s physical and mental health, as well as education and social inclusion.

The Trust also runs the A Team Hub. The Hub supports children and young adults with special needs and neurodevelopmental conditions. Here, parents and carers can talk with staff while their children enjoy activities. It's a reassuring environment where people can access support and information.
Our partnership enables us to get involved with the Trust's activities. These include coffee mornings, family events and social media and marketing campaigns.
Our results: reaching over 271,000 parents or carers
The Leigh Youth and Community Development Trust benefits a huge community of local people. Our partnership has reached over 271,000 parents/carers. It helped them better understand their energy use and how they can take control of it.
The amazing work of the Trust proves how small things can make a huge difference to the wellbeing of a parent/carer and their family. A smart meter can play a part in improving financial wellbeing. And if it helps reduce someone's worry too, that's a big win.
